For anyone who ever dreamed of being an astrologer, The Zooniverse is the internet’s largest, most popular and most successful citizen science projects.

The Zooniverse began with a single project- Galaxy Zoo. It was launched in July 2007. The Galaxy Zoo team expected a fairly quiet life, but were overwhelmed by the response to the project! Once they’d recovered from their server buckling under the strain, they set about planning the future!

Produced, maintained and developed by the Citizen Science Alliance, and working with many academic and other partners around the world, the site’s goal is to produce projects that use the efforts and ability of volunteers to help scientists and researchers deal with the flood of data that confronts them.

The registration is free. You sign up, add an avatar which you can create, and add a profile. There are many projects to help with, and plenty more are on the way. If you’re new to the Zooniverse, it is suggested you pick a project and dive in! Your account will get you into all of our projects, and you can keep track of what you’ve contributed by watching ‘My Zooniverse’.

Current projects include Galaxy Zoo, Solar Storm-watch, and The Hunt for the Supernovae!

Galaxy Zoo was important because not only was it incredibly popular, but it produced many unique scientific results, ranging from individual discoveries to those using classifications that depend on the input of everyone who’s visited the site. This commitment to producing real research is at the heart of everything they do.

Maybe you cannot boldly go aboard your favorite starship, but you can search the stars like the pros!

She isn’t The Oracle in Batman, but a woman who was watching the sunset on a tourist webcam in northern Germany spotted a man lost on the frozen North Sea! She alerted the authorities and probably saved his life!

The man had become disoriented, after climbing over pack ice off the coast of St. Peter-Ording, to photograph the sunset. The man began using his camera to flash for help, when he was unable to locate the beach.

Hundreds of miles away in southern Germany, the woman watching the same sunset saw the frantic man on her computer. She then contacted the authorities, who guided the man, a German tourist, to shore by flashing their car lights.

Had he not been found, the man would have frozen to death on the ice.

The webcam images are routinely erased, so the dramatic flashes from the man’s camera were not saved before the story came to light.

The 1st Academy Awards ceremony was held Thursday, May 16, 1929, at the Hotel Roosevelt in Hollywood to honor outstanding film achievements of 1927 and 1928.

52 years later, The Razzies arrived.

On March 6th, The 29th Golden Raspberry Awards (as in ‘blowing a Raspberry’) will be held to recognize the worst in film. Founded by American copywriter and publicist John J.B. Wilson, the event annually precedes the Academy Award ceremony by one day.

And what a year we had in film! “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” and “Land of the Lost” top the pics for worst movie of the year. They each got seven nominations on Monday, including worst picture of 2009 and worst-acting slots for Will Ferrell and Megan Fox.

Other nominees for worst picture include “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra”, “Old Dogs” and “All About Steve” with Sandra Bullock, who is also Oscar nominated for “The Blind Side”. If she wins both, she will be the first in history to do so.

As happy as I am to see ‘Land of the Lost’ nominated, the fact that both Miley Cyrus (as worst actress) and her dad Billy Ray, (as worst supporting actor) for “Hannah Montana: The Movie” made me LOL!

Unlike the Oscars, the Razzies are voted on by paid members. For as little as $25.00 a year, anyone can have the bragging rights of being a voting member. To be on the Oscar committee, you have to win and Oscar. This sounds like a lot more fun!

I may join, just to get my licks in on Will Ferrell and company for once again ruining Land of the Lost!

Spiderman? FOUR?! NOOO!!!

(Cue the deep voiceover)

IN A WORLD WHERE TOBY MAGUIRE AND SAM RAIMI ARE NO LONGER NEEDED… A NEW BREED OF SPIDER IS COMING!

Spider-man 4 news reports that Raimi has left the franchise. Therefore, the Spider-Man as we’ve known it for the past 3 films is gone. Sony says they will reboot the franchise in 2012 with a new director and an all new cast. That means goodbye Toby and Kirsten and William Dafoe and JK Simmons, who’s amazing turn as JJ Jameson was the dork candy this comic fan enjoyed!

R.I.P. Spiderman! We will miss ya!

So, MAc got a phone, then Google got a phone. Meanwhiele, Coca-Cola is all like ‘We need a phone!’

In a lab, somewhere in an abandoned nuclear bunker, miles below the earth… the dream came true!

Well, maybe not with the drama, but… Nokia has created the cola-phone! A cell phone that runs on cola… and, though it seems any cola will do, all the news of this has shown pictures and video of the phone being filled with the crisp cola taste of Coke!

So! Let the bidding war begin, Pepsi! Get in there and fight, RC! Let’s refuel (pun intended) that cola war while charging up our phone!

The only question I have is- can we drink the cola after the call?cola

dedelkIn the wild, there also are dorks. Here is the proof.

One morning, A Viroqua WI man awoke to find his concrete Elk statue lying on the ground. He went outside to investigate, wondering what punk kid was able to knock over the heavy stone beast.

Then, the situation had become clear. A short distance away lie a dead Deer. The 180 pound animal, in the rut, decided to challenge the Elk statue for male dominance.

So, Dorks do exist in the wild, they just don’t live too long. I guess that is natural selection for ya!

From the local paper – Flying Monkey punches man.

A man dressed as a flying monkey from “The Wizard of Oz” sent a Halloween reveler to the hospital in critical condition after allegedly punching the victim over change at a downtown bar.

Well of course this happened at Halloween during the local festivities, but it’s still hilarious to hear about how someone in a flying monkey suit thinks they can be an actual flying monkey. It was more about the theft of some change.

Have to admit, it’s creative. This dork was arrested, though.

I’ve seen some interesting kiosk booths before. The regular photo booth, the one photo booth that sketches out the picture, the penny smasher and the gumball contraption dispenser.

Remember the wax animal maker at the zoo?

Well this is a new one. It’s called the ‘Hurricane Simulator’. For $2.00, you will get a super fast fan blow air into the booth and “Simulate” a Hurricane.

I think I’ll pass on paying $2 to be part of a fake natural disaster.

If you didnt know what this was, what would you have guessed?

What can I say about this amazing site? Have you ever wanted to have a lightsaber duel with yourself?

Select from several sabers, from Padawan Anakin to Darth Vader to Count Dukoo! Click, drag, click to ignite and you are now using the Jedi’s legendary weapon of choice!

Not as clumsy as the Blaster simulator, but not quite as endearing as a Laser Whip to the arse!

Definetly one of the webs most incredibly weird sites!

Evil Dead the Musical

Evil Dead the Musical

I just saw this on TV last week. Of course it was network television, so a lot was cut out. Not with the chainsaw.

For those in the DC area, you will be able to get to see the Live musical of this cult classic at the Landless Theatre. Based on Sam Raimi’s 80s cult classic films, Evil Dead The Musical tells the tale of 5 college kids who travel to a cabin in the woods and accidentally unleash an evil force.

Evil Dead the Musical runs from October 7 through November 1
