USS Apartment - Star Trek Apartment and Trailer

In honor of the new Star Trek prequil trailer, we have this: A guy in London takes his flat (aka apartment) and turns it into his own Captains Bridge. Actually a “Voyager Style” Studio apartment, designed by Tony Alleyne.

What inspires a man to change his apartment like that? I suppose you could have put up some french pattern wallpaper or pad the walls with egg crate padding (like I did for audio). So why not Trekkin it?

Read more about the Apartment here. Complete with before and after pictures.

Star Trek comes out May 9th. View the Trailer here.

XKCD - A Web Comic.

xjcd really means nothing, but if you add up the letters, you get 42 (Add your Douglas Adams reference here). The creator is Randall Munroe, a former NASA contractor. He loves science and numbers, so the comic has a lot of reference for that.

The comic is as simple as it can be - Stick figures in a daily comic fashion. What it lacks in artistic ability, it gains in thought process. Of course, not all of it is heavy thought, as the comic below shows. There are also comics that get a little more artistic, too.

The content isn’t in a Mature nature, but parents might want to check it out first.

Build Your Own Balanced Scooter

I don’t think we can call it a Segway because that would imply it’s a Segway. Alas, this is a cool alternative to the Segway and if you ever wanted a Segway, you might find this a good alternative to the Segway.

Trevor Blackwell is an inventor of some pretty cool stuff. Founder of Anybots, a humanoid-like robot - as well as an entrapraneur in getting people the startup capitol. He is also a tinkerer.

Trevor has created some other cool items such as the “Improved Keyboard”. However, the Balanced Scooter is a project that you can build. The following web page shows you how to build a Balanced Scooter. According to Trevor, it’s a relatively simple concept, so I don’t want to hear any whining you cannot do it.

Go on. Get building. Send me your pictures, too.

Dwigger

Are you into Twitter? Are you into Digg? Well, maybe Dwigger is for you! Dwigger is a Twitter API with a Digg twist - you can simply Digg the Twitter.

Another cool idea that Dwigger has is to split up the Dwiggs by country. One thing I would ask them to think of is to not separate the US by location - maybe have a US category and location subcats.

Otherwise, if you’re a Twitter Dork, then maybe Dwigger is the program to play with. Wouldn’t it be cool if Dwigger was supported in Twhril? Hint, hint, hint…

Go to Kidsland!

Even Kids need a place to go on the internet. So why not Kidsland? Thinkout Solution LLC, released their first official KidsLand service. With games, movies and activities, this site is set to teach youngsters while keeping them entertained.

It looks like a great site. Unfortunately, it does come with a price. $6.95 a month or $62.95 a year, which is a $20 savings. Then again if it helps your kid become more successful in class, then it would be worth it, right? At least the BLOG is free.

So your question might be: Is this really a dorky thing? YES! It’s about kids and it’s about learning. That’s cool-dorky stuff. Edumatcate!

Kidsland is in Beta right now.

Weird Science

August 2nd, 1985 a movie about two nerds who build a woman out of a Barbie doll and a computer. Lisa then turns the tables and shows the two how to face their problems. Wyatt - who was completely controlled by his bigger brother Chet, and Gary - the man who just wants to be a ladies man.

The movie stars Anthony Michael Hall, IIan Mitchell-Smith and Kelly LaBrock. Bill Paxton and Robert Downey Jr. also play parts in this coming of age movie. And it’s all writen and directed by John Hughes, who pretty much made the 80’s what they were with his movies.

When I found out that this Saturday it’s been 23 years since it’s release, I thought I would do something with one of the dorkiest, yet popular movies in the 80’s. I found what is being touted as “The official site”. While it mostly likely is just a fan site (after all the name of the URL is kutha), it is still a pretty good site and definitely a Dorky thing.

So check out http://www.kutha.com/ for a trip back to times when computers were run with floppy disks and guys wear bras on the tops of their heads.

Minus Garfield. YAY!

I’ll be honest - I am not a fan of Garfield. I thought the strip should have went away a long time ago. That is until I read a new version of this called “Garfield minus Garfield”

The comic is simple: publish a strip with just Jon, the owner of the cat. Photoshop out the annoyance and poof! You have a completely new comic! Best part - it’s FUNNIER than the original!

Now there are some of you that are into the Lasagana eating feline. That is all and well. I was never into Cathy comics, either. But I like the new turn of direction with this. Makes me wonder what other comics would get funnier.

BTW - Dan Walsh, the creator, started it as a joke. Now it’s grown to a regular readership including of all people, Jim Davis. This goes to prove you never know what will be the next big thing in life.

Maybe they’ll make those plush window hanging Garfield without the cat. It will just be four suction cups….

Minus Garfield. YAY!

Easter Eggs

An Easter Egg is a brightly colored egg that you hide in your backyard for your kids to find or to attract Bears. Hopefully not the latter - unless you live in Chicago and want Brian Urlacher in your backyard tackling you kids.

Anyway, Easter Eggs on DVD’s or Video games are little tricks you can do to find hidden content. They’re not always brightly colored, or even taste like candy or eggs, but they sometimes hold some cool content you can watch to feel like you were part of the making of a movie, or an extra level in a game.

http://www.eeggs.com/ is a great place to start to find out the best eggs. http://www.eggheaven.com/ is another great site that gives you the secrets.

Dork Tower

For John Kovalic, Dork is everything. A Native of Wisconsin, John was born in England. he went to the University of Wisconsin for some other dorky stuff that is a whole other subject. Kovalic worked for the Daily Cardnal, a UW rag. That started Wild Life, in which Johns’ work took him to the local newspaper.

Kovalic was part of some great things, such as Whad’Ya Know? a Trivia game based on the radio show, and illustrated “Apples to Apples”. Dork Tower is a comic that started in 96 after a trip to GenCon. John used “Carson the Muskrat”, a character from his ”Wild Life” strip to build the cast around. Carson was a gamer so everything fell into place.

Check out the site here.  To be extra dorky, you should buy his earlier work. It’s up on ebay.

One Cold Hand, one lost shoe

I hate it when I loose gloves. I have a pair that I love, and now one is missing. My hands will never be warm again.

I really hate it when I lose shoes. One foot cold, one foot comfy. And it’s not like I can alternate feet on this.

Well, not to feer, cause One Cold Hand and Lost Shoe Diaries are here. They are the retrievers of lost hand and foot paraphanalia. Hundreds of sad gloves and footwear looking to reunite with their soulmate. It’s a tragic story, but sometimes they come to success like a tear jerker. Maybe they need some type of reunited theme music?

Anyway, Check out the websites found at http://www.onecoldhand.com/. and http://lostshoediaries.com.
